Steps to Refinish Hardwood Floors without Sanding

Here is how to refinish hardwood floors without sanding that you can immediately do:

  • Prep your floor. Sweep your floor clean and mop it using warm water, but it is better if you can use cleaner with neutral PH. Make sure the floor is not too drenched, because it can cause water damage.
  • Pick the right oil or lacquer for your floor coating type. Use polyurethane lacquer for lacquer-based floor coating, and wax oil for oil-based floor coating.
  • Abrade the floor lightly. Unlike the total refinish project with heavy-duty sanding machine, you can just use 120 bit sand paper that you apply with hands. Make sure to go with the grains of wood floor, and do it with just enough force, not pushing the sand paper down.
  • Vacuum the surface. Make sure not to leave any small particles.
  • Apply the lacquer or oil for your floor, depending on the floor type. Use short pile roller for oil, and long pile roller for lacquer.

Unless you ask your contractor about the hardwood floor coating, you might have no idea what coating your floor has. Lacquer-based coating is usually shinier, with lighter shade, and it does not get worn out easily. Oil-based coating is usually darker or more to the orange side and the surface gets worn out easily. Knowing how to refinish hardwood floors without sanding helps you refurbishing the floor easily.
